Journey to the Center
of the Earth

by Harold Houdini

Part 1
The Graveyard Bones

“Oh no!” the woman said as she spotted a dirty pile of bones on the
sidewalk. Some were stained with blood. “Those teenagers must be
fooling around again.” She said. She picked up the bones and used a
bloody one as a torch. Then she scraped it against the iron fence. SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAACHHHHH! The piercing
sound almost woke up the neighborhood. Finally, a dim light appeared.
She slowly walked into the graveyard. The woman’s name was Margret
Howl. She lived at 13 Mummy Drive. She had a purse, wrinkly skin,
was short, and was 50 years old. She peered at her watch. It was 11:00 pm.
She put the bones near a gravestone reading: I. M. READY. The grave had
a skeleton hand sticking out of it. The woman started running towards the
exit. She tripped and fell into the mud. She got up and wiped the mud from
her face. She was standing near another grave. It read: ROCKY ROAD and
had torches on it. Mmmmm…ice cream! She lit the torches and the ground
opened up. Cool! She stepped down into the passage way. That’s when she
realized rocky road didn’t mean ice cream. She looked out on the bumpy,
rigid road.

Part 2
The Map

She stepped inside. SLAM! The door slammed shut. “AHH!” The woman
screamed. She dropped her torch and started running in circles.
Unfortunately, the road had grass on it, so it set on fire. “Yeeow!”
the woman screamed again. She started running toward the exit trying
to beat the flames. She dived out of the cave and SPLAT! She had landed
in a pit full of mud. She got up and spit out some grass. She looked up and
realized she was still in the cave. She was standing in a lake of mud. On
the wall was a map. It had words on it. It said: YOU ARE ON A JOURNEY
TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH TO RETRIEVE THE TREASURE OF
THE SKELETONS. TO GET THERE, YOU HAVE TO CROSS THE PIT OF DESPAIR. CLIMB THE SPIDERS NET OF CONFUSION, AND SURF THE ELECTRIC WAVES. THEN YOU CN HAVE THE TREASURE OF THE
SKELETONS.

Part 3
The Tasks

“Easy!” Margaret yelled. She ran to the pit of despair. It was a giant pool
of mud. “Darn”, she said, “I wish I hadn’t worn heels.” She swam across
the pit and AHH! Just kidding! She jumped out of the mud pit and wiped
her eyes. Next was the web of confusion. She started climbing up the web.
It was easy until she looked down. There must have been thousands of
ways across the web. She remembered something on the map. ONLY
ONE PATH IS SAFE. “Oh no!” she cried. “Which way do I go?” She saw
skeletons on some of the paths. Some paths were bloodstained. Then she
had an idea. She started bouncing on the web. BOING! She bounced all
the way till she got to the other side. She stepped down and…BOO!
Kidding! She stepped down and went to the electric waves. They were
the easiest. She grabbed a rubber board and started surfing.

Part 4
The Curse

She jumped off the waves. While she was walking to the treasure, she
thought about how much fun she had. She decided to use the money in
the treasure chest for food and her husband, Joe. She wished she had
this fun all the time. She walked over to the treasure chest and opened
it. There was a shrill scream. Margaret Howl was never seen again.
